About James J.L. Ahern

James is a seasoned trial attorney with a robust background in both prosecution and defense. Before joining Fuller & Ahern, P.C., he served as a Deputy District Attorney for the Fourth Judicial District in El Paso County, Colorado. During his tenure as a prosecutor, James gained substantial courtroom experience, handling a wide range of serious felony and misdemeanor cases, including First Degree Murder, Aggravated Robbery, Arson, Vehicular Homicide, and numerous domestic violence matters. He also served as the Arson Liaison for the District Attorney's Office and contributed to the vehicular homicide and assault team.

Since transitioning to private practice, James has concentrated his efforts on criminal defense and personal injury litigation. He has successfully represented clients facing allegations such as DUI/DWAI, Assault, Sexual Assault, Burglary, and Stalking, along with a variety of other charges. His work in personal injury has resulted in millions of dollars recovered for clients harmed due to negligence.

James’s legal acumen and trial record have earned him repeated recognition from prestigious legal organizations. Since 2014, he has been included in The National Trial Lawyers: Top 40 Under 40, and since 2017, in the organization’s Top 100 Criminal Defense Lawyers. From 2016 to 2021, he was named to the Super Lawyers Colorado Rising Stars list—an honor limited to a select group of attorneys statewide. Since 2021, he has also been recognized by America’s Top 100 Criminal Defense Attorneys.

He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Colorado at Denver, where he graduated cum laude and with distinction, and a Juris Doctorate from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law. James lives in Douglas County, Colorado with his wife, Brittany, and their three children.
