About Joel Shue Elsea

Joel Elsea is an alumnus of the University of Richmond, where he distinguished himself in the field of History and secured membership in Phi Alpha Theta, an honor society recognizing academic excellence. As a student, Joel demonstrated leadership as the captain of the NCAA Division I swim team. His journey to Stetson University College of Law was driven by a singular ambition: to excel in the country's premier Trial Advocacy program. Joel's academic and extracurricular engagements at law school were tailored to this goal. He was awarded the Victor O. Whele award for his outstanding performance in Trial Advocacy and contributed as a teaching assistant in the subject. As a key member of Stetson's distinguished Trial Team, Joel showcased his advocacy skills in national competitions across cities like Jacksonville, Miami, Atlanta, and Los Angeles. His exceptional abilities earned him memberships in The Order of Barristers and The International Academy of Trial Lawyers upon graduation.

Joel served judicial internships under the guidance of Hon. Brandt C. Downey, III, and Hon. Amy Williams in the Sixth Judicial Circuit of Pinellas County, where he gained insight into criminal proceedings. His tenure as a Certified Legal Intern in the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit of Hillsborough County paved the way for his role as an Assistant State Attorney. In his prosecutorial career, Joel initially managed juvenile, traffic, and misdemeanor cases before advancing to lead attorney on thousands of felony cases over more than a decade. His responsibilities included overseeing case development from investigation to trial and sentencing, supervising other attorneys, and deciding on jury trial cases. Joel's trial experience encompasses a wide range of serious charges, including homicide, arson, and drug trafficking, among others.
