I don't have a laptop at home, so I can't finish the assignment," said Tony, a bright transfer student from Lubbock, Texas, who recently moved into my school district. His words fell with quiet thud. Ms. Kim stopped typing, her eyes softening as Tony tried to keep up with assignments using a laptop with a broken screen. The disparity between us felt too real, underscoring a systemic issue that extended far beyond my classroom.

Eager to translate such awareness into an actionable plan, I contacted the Stevenson Foundation, a program at my high school to support first generation students, to reach out and help my peers in finding workable solutions to address this common issue of unequal access to opportunities. After having made an informational presentation on digital equity for the Alliant Credit Union Foundation, I spearheaded a grant of $23,000 to provide laptops, software, and workshops for first-generation college students in Adlai E. Stevenson. Additionally, we facilitated the donation of 50 refurbished laptops to families in under-resourced communities. Seeing how resources such as these had transformed students like Tony inspired me to reflect further on systemic inequities and consider what role I might play in trying to help change it.

As I move forward, I plan to expand my scope of work in bridging socioeconomic gaps. With my background of being a founder of a leadership organization: The Venture Odyssey, where we used multiple skill sets that local ventures have difficult times accessing, such as data analysis, to help small businesses thrive in their community, I will design a mentorship program in my community that will pair underserved high school students with mentors who will guide them through the college application process, career exploration, and workshops in several subjects that include resume writing and financial literacy. I envision a world where I will be able to empower students toward pathways that perhaps they once thought were unreachable.

I will also expand my work with local nonprofits to provide community workshops on access to technology and educational resources. Leading donations of laptops taught me that one cannot just hand over tools to people but also give the skills to which these tools are applied. Furthermore, my experiences tutoring students through SAT preparation and physics, have reinforced my belief in a tailored approach for meeting each student's unique needs. These hands-on experiences taught me the importance of personalized guidance in bridging gaps in society through education.

These initiatives helped me learn that bringing true change is not just about noticing disparities but making changes based on empathy and collaboration. Building bridges involves focusing on obstacles to opportunities and helping others realize their full potential. I view my future as not only about challenges to myself, but also an opportunity to inspire others to join me in this fight. Through unifying communities through mentorship and education, I aspire to make a difference in ways that may go way beyond this year: a movement of equivalence, opportunity, and empowerment from generation to generation.
