About Matthew G. Shaw

Matt Shaw is an alumnus of the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana and Illinois College, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree Magna Cum Laude in 1983. He furthered his education at the Northern Illinois University College of Law, receiving his Juris Doctorate in 1986, and was admitted to the Illinois Bar on November 6, 1986.

With a background in general and family law, Shaw served as the child support attorney for the Kane County Circuit Court Clerk's Office from 1987 to 1995. He founded his own practice focusing on family law in 1991 and in 2000, he became a co-founder of Shaw, Jacobs, Goostree & Associates, P.C. in St. Charles, Illinois. This firm practiced family law, dealing with marriage dissolution, financial disputes, and custody litigation. By 2016, he established Shaw Sanders, P.C., returning to private practice.

An experienced legal author and speaker, Shaw has contributed significantly to the field of family law, participating in the ISBA Family Law Section Council since 1991, publishing articles, and presenting at seminars across the country. He notably testified before the Illinois Supreme Court Custody Committee on proposed custody legislation in 2003. Shaw's extensive experience in Illinois courts covers representing a diverse clientele in family law matters, serving as a Mediator and Guardian ad Litem, and successfully mediating cases outside the courtroom.

Beyond his legal practice, Shaw has shared his experience through television and radio interviews, led divorce support groups, and since 1993, has been actively involved in the Kids in a Divorcing Society (KIDS) program. He has also co-chaired the Kane County Family Law Committee and supported various legal aid organizations, demonstrating his commitment to the community and the advancement of family law.
