Elite Lawyer

elite lawyerIn the 21st century, attorneys and law firms have a multitude of different options for promoting themselves and connecting with potential clients. Because so many people use online search engines to find information about legal issues and identify attorneys who can help them, it is crucial for lawyers to make sure they show up in online searches and demonstrate the value they can provide to their clients. Attorney directories such as Elite Lawyer can be a great way of doing so, and inclusion in the right directories will demonstrate that an attorney has the skills and experience to meet their clients’ legal needs. However, there are many different online directories or websites that recognize attorneys with awards, and lawyers may be concerned about whether these services are legitimate.

Legit Attorney Directories Vs. Vanity Awards

There are a large number of organizations and websites that claim to recognize attorneys who are among the best in a certain field or geographical region. These sites will often state that only a small percentage of attorneys are recognized or that they have a screening process that ensures that only the “best” lawyers are selected. However, many of these services primarily exist to sell awards or directory listings without verifying that attorneys are qualified. Some law firms or other organizations have even successfully nominated their pets for awards or inclusion in these directories.

So, how can an attorney determine whether an award or directory is legitimate or is just trying to sell them a fancy plaque or trophy? Here are a few indicators that an online attorney directory can provide benefits to both lawyers and their clients:

  • The organization uses a rigorous screening and selection process - While most awards and directories claim that they review an attorney’s record, many only perform a cursory inspection to make sure a person has not received public reprimands. They may also allow a person to nominate themselves for an award rather than requiring peer nominations. A legitimate directory will use a rigorous selection process to ensure that only qualified attorneys are listed, and this process may review multiple factors, such as a lawyer’s amount of experience, their verdicts and settlements, articles they have published or CLE programs they have participated in, and their overall reputation.

  • The directory offers tools attorneys can use to promote themselves and their practice - If a directory simply lists a person’s name and provides them with a badge to place on their website, this may be a sign that it is not legitimate. Reputable directories will provide attorneys with services to help them connect with clients, such as bio pages that detail their experience and accomplishments, custom videos that can be posted on a website or shared on social media, reviews from clients, press releases, and other tools that can be used to improve search engine optimization (SEO).

  • The website provides potential clients with helpful, easily accessible information - If an organization’s site includes only the most basic information about attorneys and their areas of practice, it may be nothing more than an attempt to build links and influence SEO. If a directory site includes information that is helpful for clients seeking information about legal issues, such as attorney blogs, this is a sign that it is legitimately working to help connect people with lawyers who can meet their needs.

  • The organization is dedicated to furthering the interests of the legal community - If a directory does not only provide listings for lawyers who meet certain standards, but also works to provide other types of services to people, this is likely a sign that it is not just a marketing program, but an organization that is dedicated to promoting the community as a whole. For example, Elite Lawyer provides scholarships to college students who are dedicated to making positive changes in people’s lives.

b2ap3_thumbnail_shutterstock_1654957381.jpgToday, it seems like nearly everything people do creates a digital record. In many cases, this is intentional, such as when a person posts updates on social media. However, multiple other types of information about people’s activities are stored online, such as the purchases they make, the locations they visit, and the websites they use. While online information about most people may not have a significant effect on how they are perceived by others, this issue can be much more consequential for people in certain professions. Attorneys, in particular, can face a great deal of scrutiny, and their online reputation can play a role in the types of cases they take and the clients they serve. To ensure that they are able to maintain professionalism and demonstrate the value they can provide to their clients, lawyers will want to understand their options regarding reputation management.

Addressing Positive and Negative Online Reviews

Currently, many people rely on online reviews when they are researching businesses and service providers, including law firms. Customers or clients may leave reviews on multiple websites, such as Google, Yelp, and Yahoo, along with ratings of between one and five stars. The average rating a law firm has received may appear alongside search results for those who are searching for an attorney. This can often be a key deciding factor for potential clients, affecting whether they choose to visit a law firm’s website or contact a lawyer for help with legal issues.

Online reviews can be a key aspect of search engine optimization (SEO) for a law firm, and attorneys will want to receive as many positive reviews as possible. A high average rating and reviews from clients that describe the benefits an attorney provides to their clients will encourage people to work with them. Unfortunately, this means that negative reviews and low ratings can also have a significant effect on an attorney’s reputation and SEO.

In some cases, a law firm may be able to have negative reviews removed. Since Google and other sites state that reviews must be left by a business’s actual clients, a review may be taken down if an attorney can show it was left by someone other than a client. Reviews may also be removed if they violate a site’s standards, such as by using profane language or linking to a competitor. If a review cannot be removed, other strategies may be used, such as encouraging clients to leave positive reviews that will increase a firm’s average rating or contacting a person, addressing their concerns, and asking them to change or remove a negative review.

To be listed in the Elite Lawyer directory, an attorney must meet certain standards and demonstrate high levels of achievement and excellence. b2ap3_thumbnail_shutterstock_302536883-3.jpgAttorneys have many different options for promoting themselves, connecting with potential clients, and demonstrating their achievements and experience. Press releases can play a significant role in a law firm’s overall marketing strategy by helping get the word out about significant achievements, awards, or changes that affect a firm and its clients. Attorneys who have been recognized with the Elite Lawyer award can receive customized press releases to announce this achievement, and press releases can be used in a variety of other ways to promote a law firm and its attorneys.

Benefits of Press Releases

Law firms can use press releases for a variety of purposes, including announcing that their attorneys have received awards, letting people know about significant victories they have achieved for their clients, or informing people of changes at a firm, such as lawyers joining the practice or becoming partners. Press releases can provide multiple advantages, including:

  • Increased visibility - Press releases may be picked up by multiple news organizations, newspapers, or websites. When a single press release appears in a large number of outlets, many people will learn about a firm, and they will likely have a positive impression of its attorneys. A story in a major news outlet will increase a firm’s credibility, encouraging potential clients to contact the firm when they need legal services.

  • Increased website traffic - Since outlets that pick up press releases may link back to a firm’s website, people who read a story may visit the site to learn more about the firm and its services, learn about the legal issues its attorneys can address, and determine whether they want to contact the firm for legal help.

  • Search engine optimization (SEO) - News websites are often considered to be authoritative sources of information, and links from these sites to a firm’s website can make a site more likely to show up in online search results. Press releases are a great way to build these types of links and improve a law firm’s SEO.

  • Sharing on social media - In addition to sending out a press release and having it picked up by news outlets, a firm can promote this story on various social channels. A press release can be posted on social media accounts for a firm and its attorneys, and it can also be shared in online communities that include the firm’s target audience. It may then be shared by others, further increasing visibility and letting more people know about the legal services that the firm can provide.

b2ap3_thumbnail_shutterstock_269620724.jpgWhen a company creates a website for their business, they often are most concerned about the accuracy of the included information and if the design reflects their brand. It may not seem important to consider if the site is easily accessible to a person with disabilities. However, websites that do not feature certain accommodations may face harsh penalties, and the business may be deemed discriminatory.

What is ADA Compliance?

In 1990, the federal Americans with Disabilities Act was passed to eliminate discrimination against individuals with disabilities. This act requires businesses to accommodate customers who may require wheelchair ramps and Braille. As the digital landscape continues to expand for businesses, this act has started to become increasingly relevant for websites.

The ADA was originally enacted to allow those with disabilities equal opportunity and protect them from discrimination. With nearly limitless opportunities across the internet, web content that is not equally accessible may be seen as discriminatory. The ADA has started to protect individuals who access business websites via a screen reader, voice navigation, or other assistive devices.

Knowing when a business is required to comply with the act and what is expected of those businesses can help to protect against lawsuits and accommodate the disabled individuals in their community.

Is ADA Compliance Required?

There is still a lot of grey area regarding how the ADA will affect websites. However, there are certain businesses that are increasingly required to uphold certain standards, including:

  • Title I Businesses: These businesses employ a minimum of 15 full-time employees and operate for at least 20 weeks per year.

  • Title III Businesses: These businesses are categorized as “public accommodation”, including hotels, public transportation, and banks.

If a company has a brick-and-mortar location, it is also more likely that the business’s website will be covered by ADA. However, it is still important for companies with no physical location to make their sites as accommodating as possible.

When a company fails to ensure that its website is ADA-compliant, the company may face backlash in the form of financial liabilities, lawsuits, and damage to a business’s reputation. While there are no set guidelines and the rules remain unclear, several companies follow the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines which provide a reference point for businesses who want to enhance the accessibility of their website. Creating a consistent, organized layout with text transcripts for video and audio content is a great place to start.

The Elite Lawyer Scholarship Team has selected Ms. Abigail Reeves as our newest award recipient. Abigail’s essay was well organized and professionally written. It also demonstrated her immense desire to help others and make a difference.

About the Spring 2022 Award Winner

Abigail Reeves has always been an avid reader. When she was younger, Abigail spent countless hours browsing novels at her school library. Abigail soon learned that not all children have that same opportunity. What she once thought was the norm for all children, was actually a great privilege. Since this realization, she has sought to bring this privilege of accessible books to children and families in her area who may not be as fortunate.

A creative writing major at Arizona State University, Abigail’s appreciation for learning and reading inspired her to form a library through the organization, A New Leaf. This mission allows Abigail the opportunity to help her community by providing access to more reading materials for both families of abuse and those living homeless.

Abigail’s aspirations to serve her community and bring the gift of reading to children in her area is not limited to this sole project. She appreciates the joys and advantages books give to children and adults alike and hopes to help in any way she can.

After graduating, Abigail intends to either enter the workforce or continue her education pursuing a Master of Fine Arts and focusing on creative writing.
